Lush - the under dog of the bath and body works industry

So we're all familiar with "Lush" Cosmetic. We've all been to the store - or at least smelled it when walking by; whether it be their newly renovated store on Robson or the small ones in your local malls. I must admit that I wasnt a fan of Lush before; I found it a bit too pricey and the packing is too cheap and ugly (really?! I pay $10 for a bath bomb and you're putting it in a paper bag??! and all your other cosmetic bottles and cases are black.)
Maybe I'm easily distracted and a bit shallow, or maybe marketing and packaging have molded us to be way too choosey. Look around you, we are overly-stimulated by the technology and products; everything is brightly coloured or packed with prints and glitters. Needless to say, I wasnt quite satisfied with the packaging at Lush. So I did what most snobby Vancourites would do; sneered and scoffed at the mention of Lush and went to their competitors instead; with prettier packaging and colourful decorated stores.
Not until recently I did a research paper on Lush Cosmetic, and I was blown away by the company's mission statement and work ethics:

"We believe in making effective products from fresh, organic* fruit and vegetables, the finest essential oils and safe synthetics.
We invent our own products and fragrances. We make them fresh by hand using little or no preservative or packaging, using only vegetarian ingredients, and tell you when they were made.
We believe in buying ingredients only from companies that do not commission tests on animals and in testing our products on humans.
We believe in happy people making happy soap, putting our faces on our products and making our mums proud.
We believe in long candlelit baths, sharing showers, massage, filling the world with perfume and in the right to make mistakes, lose everything and start again.
We believe our products are good value, that we should make a profit and that the customer is always right.
* We also believe words like fresh and organic have honest meaning beyond marketing."

Lush is a vertically intergrated company, meaning they buy, source, and produce products and ship it to their stores. They have factories/labs in cities where their stores are; so they have total control of what's going in the products. And let me tell you, they are great stuff; fresh organic products.
And the reason for their less fancy packaging? simple; to reduce our carbon footprints. After reading about the company, I thought back on how many empty bottles and cases have I thrown out from other companies, and let me tell ya; I lost count.

So after a long week of school and hard work, what did I do? went straight to Lush and bought myself some of their new spring products. I cant wait to try them out but I know this time around, I'll have a better appreciation for them.

Brad Pitt is the first....

The 'net has been buzzing about this exciting news; just in case you havent heard we'll tell ya. It's official that Brad Pitt is going to be the new face of Chanel No 5 perfume.
Years and years ago, actresses took over the jobs of supermodels as the front cover faces for high fashion magazines.. and now it seems like the men are taking over those as well; recently super hot DILF David Beckham landed the gig for the first ever male to pose solo for the cover of Elle magazine, and now it's Mr Pitt. It's reported that he will be flying to London to start filming for the TV commercial.
Are you excited?? I know Im at least a tad bit curious to see the commercial.

WEAR THOSE DEALS FASHION SHOW

On May 6th, Wear those deals had their first fashion show showcasing their clients designs and products! Wear Those Deals is the premier fashion exclusive daily deal site. Where they bring fashion stores and the style-hungry together through great deals.Held at Heritage Hall, it was a beautiful display of our local Vancouver Artists. I worked as the coordinator of the show (basically behind the scenes) and styled the models as they walked down the runway. Not to mention my Mother, Pilar Rodriguez designs- Vancouver also showcased there too!

I must say for the first show, it was planned and organized with of couse a few mistakes here and there that every show would have. Having models of all shapes and sizes, the designers all came from different markets and styles that makes vancouver so creative and artistic. Take a look below at some pictures of the event!

We is back

Sorry that Dom and I have been MIA for days, ok well weeks but who's counting ?! Both Dom and I have been super crazy busy with the end of our 2nd semester (projects and finals were due), and we were on a week vacation - Dom went to LA and I was in Austin Texas.
so things were a bit everywhere and kinda messy. But we is back and just as fabulous as ever; having just entered our 3rd, and last semester, there is all sorts of excitement and jitters in the air as we all can feel the graduation day drawing closer. That also means our fashion show as well, eeeeek.
I've been keeping myself occupied with school, work, photoshoot AND I've finally started my online portfolio. You know, I've always wanted to get a hardcopy and an online version of my portfolio but never really got around to it. I think mostly it's due to the fact that technology kinda intimidates me. When I was younger, I was always good and pretty tech-savvy but with all the technologies these days I just feel so so behind.
My six year old cousin could operate an electronic tablet better then I can :( isnt that sad ?!  Anyways, let's bring it back to my portfolio, so I finally got the kick in the butt - that was needed long ago- when we started our portfolio classes. I didnt have a choice but to make one, I groaned and moaned about it but I did it anyways, and for the first 24 hr I think I really dislike it. Now, after much probing and molesting that site, I am proud to say that am a (semi) pro at this now. It is still a work in progress, as I am still working and hoping to continue to be working on building and expanding my career portfolio.
In the mean time, if you have a few minutes to spare; please head on over portfoliobox to check out my profile...
Click like at the bottom left corner of the page....only if you like it and think it's good. Just like anyone else, I'd love to get supports and publish myself out there but I only want to do it if people think I'm good. :D

What would you be willing to sacrifice?

What would you give up?

Being someone who’s always been interested in the arts field, I feel that there’s always been a strong presence of expressing my emotions, ideas and my opinions. Unlike bankers, scientists, accounts or doctors; people who are artists, designers, and all fashion related professions have such a strong passion and are just so married to their careers. Not to say that the formers professions aren’t passion-enable options, but I just feel that anyone who works in the arts career has stronger emotions and more so….for a lack of a better word; “artsy” about their jobs.

I’ve seen countless facebook statuses and photos updates from my arts friends about what they did in class and/or work for that day, more so than any of my other friends from other fields of school and work. I think that’s perfectly fine to be proud of your work and I love seeing my friends’ work and their creative ideas.

But that’s not where I’m getting at; what I want to address is what are you willing to sacrifice?

So since us artsy peeps are always so passionate and attached to our careers (because for some of us, it means travelling around the globe and learn about the newest and most fabulous arts, and for some of us it is about the people we meet along the way.) is it possible for us to make a sacrifice or any sacrifice in regards to our careers. I’ve recently had the unfortunate opportunity to choose; I was dating a great guy from hundreds of miles away and it started out great but eventually it took a toll on both of us. Between school, work, filming and extra photo shoots on the side, I just had no time to commit; and with what the future holds for me upon graduation is just uncertain, I’ve decided to end the relationship. And then it got me thinking: what would I do if this same situation happens once I’ve already graduated and working well on my way towards my career. Would I pick my career or love?

What would we artsy people do? Pick whom you love over what you love, or would you rather pick what you love over whom you love? It’s always been clear to me that I would pick career over love; but that was back in my juvenile years and I didn’t really know what being in a relationship meant. However, I was so blessed to have met and be in a relationship with such a great guy I was quickly changing my mind. In the end, I still picked my career and my future but I’m still looking back and asking myself the “what if?” question.

So really really dig deep down and ask yourself, if you were in a situation where you absolutely have to choose between your career or your love, what would you choose? You might surprise yourself.

a little rant from a stylist: J2clothing Store

as a freelance stylist, you take your own risks when borrowing or buying clothing for different shoots. This particular one was a mens shoot. I had bought some of the garments from a few stores that I usually go to and then thought of checking out J2 (not naming the store location) and see if they had anything that would work well with my look.
i had found some pieces, got some really nice advise from the sales people and i told them it was for a photo shoot and that i was RETURNING them after. they say ..."oh yeah yeah sure"
after the shoot I head back to the same store to return the items. the sales person at the counter, who was there the same day i bought the items who knew that i would be returning said "we don't do refunds, exchange only"
ARE YOU KIDDING ME!

i was left with a huge credit that i would never use...sigh
so my lessons
1. don't buy from J2
2. don't use them for shoots
3. read the fine print (although the sales person did tell me i could 'return')
alright that is all for now,

Furious Dom

PS-
pictures of the shoot coming soon! (something i can look forward too)

Naked - Dev ft Enrique Iglesias

I've been waiting for this music video to drop for ages. I've always been a fan of Dev; ever since her first collaboration with Far East Movement "Like A G6", I knew she was gonna make it big. Not to disappoint, her sophomore album, "The Night The Sun Came Up" is such a great album; if you want to bounce your lil booties to or while getting ready to go bounce your booties elsewhere.
So, I've always been meh with Enrique but IMHO I think he looks really good in this music video, I was totally down for getting naked with him.
Love Dev, love the gurl but I thought her new style was a bit off for me, I dunno. The haircut and the nude pale makeup were all too....drugged out I think. (still love her though, dont get me wrong).
That's my two cents, but check out the music video and enjoy; it is still a fun song though ;)

It Gets Better

So, for the most parts, Dom and I love our schooling, instructors and classmates very very much. There have been time where we just dreaded going to classes. However, photoshoot styling (editorial and commercial) have always been fun and very exciting. We all learn from it and can actually see and have our results presented right in front of us, pretty much like a week after.
We've just wrapped up our commercial shoot; which basically is the idea of a product(s) driven photoshoot. Everyone had great and creative visions, it was an eye opening experience; everyone's personalities and styles really shown in their work.
I thought about doing a more fun and quirky commercial idea; but I decided against that at the last minute. I wanted to show a more serious side to me, I wanted to address an issue that my classmates and instructors might not be awared of; gay teen suicidal and gay bullying. I wanted to highlight the "It Gets Better" Project. It's a great campaign and it is a personal matter to me. To those who arent awared of what I'm talking about; the It Gets Better is an internet based project started out by Dan Savage and his partner Terry Miller, in respond to gay teens committing suicide in the US. It started as a youtube video of Dan and Terry speaking about their past experiences growing up and being bully for being different, but all that changed and it all got better, in hope that teenagers would not end their previous lifes untimely. And then youtube users started posting their own stories, and soon followed after were celebrities (gay, and straight alliances alike), and even The President of the US, Barrack Obama, posted a video also encouraging teenagers to hold on because it will get better. And if you would like to know more about the campaign (as you can clearly see Im not doing it justice with my short description) please head over to their official website at http://www.itgetsbetter.org/
And I wanted to contribute to that great cause; because believe me, it does get better. It gets soo soo much better. I knew I was different in highschool, and growing up in a traditional catholic asian family (being the very first born son of a first born son), it wasnt easy ;) . Im expected to carry on the family line, being that I am the first son/grandson, they believed that I carry the pure bloodline of the family. The pressure was enormous....like the size of a tour bus, carrying elephants and whatever the heaviest items you can think of. Anywho, there were times that I seriously thought about running away and/or killing myself, then I wouldnt have to face any of those and I could do whatever I wanted. But I was blessed to have great friends, and my family was very understanding when I came out. ( Please do understand that I went through years of depressions and struggles, and that I've decided to save y'all from reading pages upon pages of my pain by really skimming down to the important details. It wasnt as easy and fluent as this post seems to y'all)

In light of that, I would like to present to you, my commercial vision for The "It Gets Better" Project. Starring the lovely and talented Ms. Kim C. and myself. In this photo set, Kim represents an androgynous figure that has struggled through the hate and names calling of the past, and now he/she is moving on with a better and brighter future.

Image Consultation Make Over

I had the opportunity to do an image consultation with a client and take her shopping to find an outfit that best suited her personality, age and lifestyle. Together another stylist, Amanda Friesen, we collaborated to distinguish what look good and what looked terrible. after a day of shopping and trying on clothes after clothes after clothes, we finally put together an outfit the complimented her body, her personality and is versatile for many occasions. After our shopping day, we had a professional photo shoot to show off her new look!

Check out the before and after pictures!

After the makeover

Doesn't she look stylish!?

Instagram will be available for Android users..soon

The fantastically fun and exciting app, Instagram, is one of the most used and popular app for iphone users since...dinosaurs roamed the earth, literally. I cant think of a single photos uploaded onto facebook on my newsfeed that isnt Instagrammed (is that a word? I think I just verb-alize the word Instagram). The users or "photographers" (and I use the word in a very very loose sense) can take a picture of any ordinary and mundane objects and transform the photograph into an amazing picture with professional-like qualities. Im sure y'all all very well awared of this app already, and can possibly operate the app while sleeping, driving, or drunk. ;)
However, this amazing app has left many non-iphone users felt deprived and inadequately equipped for the wonderful artistic world because of their lack of capturing artistic photos. Yes readers, you can probably read my melodramatic and depressed undertone thus far that I am an Android user. Though I do enjoy the capabilities, designs and originality of my Android, I often asked myself: "How would I express my feelings and emotions through this picture without the features and benefits of Instagram?"
Fret not Android brothens ..and sisters, Instagram founders had recently confirmed that a version for the Adroid will be releasing "very soon". It is currently being tested in a private beta.
I am most absolutely delighted to be downloading this app and show the world (or at least the people on my facebook) how beautiful my dinner, or a rock, the street signs, my fingernails, etc will look through Instagram's filters.
